Several attempts have been made to negotiate ceasefires in the Syrian civil war.  On January 15, 1973, U.S. President Richard Nixon ordered a ceasefire of airstrikes in North Vietnam. The decision came after Henry Kissinger, the president`s national security adviser, returned to Washington, D.C., with a peace plan from Paris, France. Combat operations in South Vietnam continued. On January 27, 1973, all parties to the Vietnam War signed an armistice as a prelude to the Paris Peace Agreement. The structure of the ceasefire negotiations has two extremely important political implications. During World War I, on December 24, 1914, there was an unofficial armistice on the Western Front when France, the United Kingdom and Germany celebrated Christmas. According to reports, the unofficial ceasefire took place the week before Christmas and british and German troops exchanged seasonal greetings and songs between their trenches.
 The ceasefire was short but spontaneous. Starting with German soldiers lighting Christmas trees, it quickly spread to the Western Front.  One report described developments in the following terms: The Ethiopian government`s June 28 Declaration on a “Unilateral Ceasefire” was preferable to a CdH or SoH aimed at pausing the fighting with the aim of rearming and regrouping its armed forces. It would have been desirable for those who welcomed it, such as the Secretary-General of the United Nations, to understand its objectives and use the more precise terminology of “unilateral suspension of hostilities” or otherwise. The terminology of ceasefires and related issues can be complicated, and there is often confusion as to what the terms actually mean. Most FCAs choose to define, within the framework of the text of this specific agreement, what a ceasefire would mean and/or imply. Whatever the definition of a CFA, its main content is, among other things, the suspension or cessation of hostilities. In practice, however, the humanitarian and human rights agenda is facilitated by the reduction, suspension or cessation of hostilities at certain times, places and in certain ways. For example, a CoH on the land corridor from Semera to Mekelle, the main transport route for aid to Tigray, could be adopted even without a broader ceasefire. While a ceasefire is also desirable, it would be useful to demand exactly the necessary measures. On November 29, 1952, president-elect of the United States, Dwight D.
Eisenhower, went to Korea to see how to end the Korean War. With the adoption by the United Nations of the ceasefire proposed by India, the ceasefire of the Korean People`s Army (CPA), the People`s Volunteer Army (PVA) and the UN Command had the line of battle approximately at the 38th latitude north. These parties signed the Korean Armistice Agreement on July 27, 1953 to end the fighting.   South Korean President Syngman Rhee attacked the peace process and did not sign the ceasefire.  Following the approval of the ceasefire agreement, which called on the governments of South Korea, North Korea, China and the United States to participate in new peace talks. The main belligerents created the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), which has since been patrolled by the APK and the joint army of the Republic of Korea, the United States and the UN command. The war is considered over at this time, although there is no peace treaty yet. It should be clear that a ceasefire between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray government requires complicated negotiations and is inherently political. International actors such as the United Nations should therefore call on the parties to enter into negotiations in good faith on a ceasefire. It is equally important that demands for a ceasefire in Ethiopia, which are implicitly or explicitly linked to the provision of humanitarian assistance to Tigray, be formulated with caution. Cessation of hostilities generally refers to a limited suspension of military activities for a specific purpose in a given geographical area or for a short period of time. Almost an equivalent is a suspension of hostilities, which clearly indicates that it is a temporary hostility.
Another equivalent is a ceasefire, which requires a tacit or explicit agreement for both sides to suspend fighting. The usual signal of a ceasefire is nothing more than a white flag. A CoH or SoH can be one-sided – one side can explain it, even if the other doesn`t reciprocate. The purpose of the consent (or unilateral declaration) of the CoH/SoH or the limited and/or temporary ceasefire could be humanitarian, religious, political and military considerations. Such a ceasefire would be negotiated and formalized between the warring parties. From this (incomplete) list, it becomes clear that this negotiation process will not be quick or easy, which is why the option of a preliminary CdH or CFA may be preferred for immediate results. First, the parties negotiating the ceasefire jointly determine the political solution that follows. Once the peace talks on the end of hostilities have begun, the warring parties represented in these talks will also become the clients negotiating the political solution. .
